OOTD: I ain't no soccer mom!

Hello Friends:

I hope that you all had a really fun, exciting weekend! Our weekend was adventurous, but not nearly as busy as my weekend (here). So this is what I wore today:

This was supposed to be my 'going to a kid's birthday party' outfit but quickly morphed into a 'little one was sick and had a pukefest this morning so brought him to his Dr. who held a walk in clinic today at his office but we missed the birthday party and I had to take the subway to work and grab my computer because I will be working from home tomorrow' outfit. Pretty crazy, huh? But not as crazy as the title of this post.

What the hell is a soccer mom anyways?

Well, Wikipedia describes it as ' a middle class suburban woman who spends most of her time transporting her kids to soccer and other various activities'.

If we look at it from a fashion point of view, it's usually ' a mother who is constantly sporting a combination of sweats (or the mom jeans' you know the kind, highwaisted, baggy and about 3 sizes too big), running shoes and the unadventurous ponytail'.  Not to critique- I mean, it's great that these women are catering to their kids, we all do it (myself included). But pul-lease do not lose your fashion sense in the process. Putting on a pair of flattering jeans and a nice top takes about the same time (if not less) then putting on those dreaded lululemon pants. Go for glam, not grungy.

So that said folks, you will not see any sweatpants here.

But maybe a sexy little shawl:

Heatwave.By.Nars

Orange you glad that you are reading this post about Heatwave by Nars?

A few months ago, I came across this gorgeous lipstick shade while reading a germ infested magazine at the doctor's office. It's described as the perfect 'universally flattering shade', a great 'pick me up' for those days that you're feeling blah. And yes, I have a lot of those blah days, but wasn't sure that I was bold enough to try an orange/red lipcolor.  So when I was in Sephora last week (after a month long ban)  I decided to check it out:

And here is a swatch with my favorite vampy color:

Doesn't this lipstick look a bit orang-ey in the tube? My fears were calmed when I was told by the makeup artist that it's actually more of a coral red shade that's perfect for all ethnicities.

And with that, I was sold:

Needless to say I love this lipcolor. It's got just the right amout of orange in it and doesn't make you feel like you are wearing a pumpkin on your lips.  It's great as a statement color (which I wear with minimal eye makeup and a touch of blush) and just a warning that because it is a matte formula it does tend to be on the dry side. To combat this I just mix in a bit of lip balm to give my lips a more hydrated look. Even though the name suggests that it's more of a spring/summer color you can bet that I will be wearing it all year round :)

OOTD: The 'I don't know how I do it' dress by DVF

Hello Friends,

Happy Monday (Ugh.). I hope that you all had the most wonderful weekend. I am actually still recovering from mine. You see, ever since I had kids, my weekends are no longer my own. It's amazing how these little peeps who walk like drunk midgets and can't wipe their own butts yet can have such packed social schedueles. Not that I'm complaining, as I wouldn't change it for the world. But this Saturday especially was crazy busy; I had to fit in a morning of grocery shopping and kids activities, followed by a baby shower in the afternoon and a dinner party for 12 chez moi in the early evening. How the hell was I going to get everything done? And more importantly what the hell was I going to wear?

And then the lightbulb went on in my head (which, doesn't happen very often by the way). I grabbed my Diane Von Furstenberg Manette dress (shown here) and decided that I would work it 3 different ways; each look tailored to reflect the activity in question. As I was unable to take actual shots of my outfits on Saturday I will do my best to do a re-enactment for you. So here goes:

Saturday: 9:00am

I swear, I must have been on crack when I signed my son up for French tutoring at 9:00 on Saturday morning. Add in an hour of grocery shopping, a tiny tigers lesson at the Tae Kwon do studio and a stop by Kumon to pick up some extra math homework and by noon I was ready for a nap. As I wanted to incorporate my DVF dress into my morning routine, I decided to keep it as casual as possible by throwing on a neutral colored Moto jacket (seen also here) and a pair of comfy, casual shoes. 

Saturday: 1:30 pm

After my morning of being a chauffeur to the little ones I had to haul ass downtown to the swanky Four Seasons hotel for the baby shower of one of my besties. We had an afternoon of high tea planned, a few hours of doing nothing but laughing, gossiping and of course, filling our faces with fancy sandwiches and litres and litres of tea. For this event I stripped off the moto jacket, added a pair of fun heels and of course I had to bring Mademoiselle Chanel out to play. 

Saturday: 5:20 pm

After high tea, I had to drive me and my food baby home, and of course traffic was a bitch and I arrived 20 minutes late to my own dinner party. How embarrassing, but very thankful I had hubby to help greet the guests, prepare the appetizers and take care of the kids in my absence. He's a god (he didn't ask me to type this in, i swear!). As I was already home I didn't really feel the need to get dressed up again but thought that it would be fun to throw on a scarf and really play hostess 'with the mostess'. This Alexander McQueen scarf is just the perfect item to throw on when I have like two seconds to spare. And you'll notice that I'm not wearing shoes. My husband calls this my 'barefoot in the kitchen' look :)

So, as you can see, my dress and I really pulled triple duty here this weekend. I really don't understand why they would pay Sarah Jessica Parker millions of dollars to star in 'I don't know how she does it' when they could have just asked me to do it for free :) Hehe, is anyone else looking forward to seeing that movie?

OOTD- Flowers and Friday

Hello Friends,

So are you happy that fall is practically here? I definitely am, and here are the reasons why:

1) I don't have to shave my legs every week anymore because I'll be hiding them in pants and tights.

2) I get to pick my superhero Halloween costume in a few weeks (I think that this year I will be Wonder Woman- get the spanx out!)

3) I get to finally get to show off my new autumn buys, starting with this top:

I have never heard of Winter Kate before, but when I saw this top at an Aritzia store (on sale- so awesome!) a few months ago I knew that I had to have it. When I found out that Winter Kate is actually a line designed by Nicole Ritchie, I wasn't really surprised, as this top represents her bohemian and carefree style. What drew me to this top were the bright, happy colors and the gorgeous flowery pattern. As I do not like to accessorize much I tend to pick statement pieces that I can just throw on and go. And this, my peeps, is definitely a statement top. It's also described as multi-function and it's so much fun to see how many different ways I can change it up:

You can leave the top loose, and just tie the front into a sailor's knot

And, you can tie it in the back to add definition to the waist

Or, you can knot it in the front (notice that I strategically placed the knot to hide the icky muffin top!)

And as tomorrow is Friday, please don't mind me as I do my happy 'Friday Dance':

Get your Glow on!

Truth be told I'm not really a faker. What I mean by that, is that is that I'm not a huge fan of fake people, fake boobs or fake butts. But what I do like, is faking good skin. I'm really openminded when trying new products and methods and I recently read about how mixing your foundation and shimmer lotion works wonders at giving your skin that perfect glow. Hmmm... interesting. I'm always up for a challenge so let's give it a try! Ready, set, GLOW!

The tools:

Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser $55 CAD and Stila All Over Shimmer  approx. $25 CAD Available at Sephora

The Steps:

1) Moisturize and prime skin if needed (my primer of choice is Laura Mercier Hydrating primer).

2) Apply 3 parts of foundation/tinted moisturizer to 1/4 part of liquid luminizer (Benefit's High Beam would work well too) to the back of the hand like so:

3) Gently mix both like this:

4) Blend into face (you can use a brush or be a cheapie like me and just use your fingers):

5) Add some eye makeup, some lipgloss and a touch of blush and Voila:

The Result:

Glowing skin! Where have you been all my life??? Wow, I was really impressed of how subtle the shimmer is, and extremely happy that I didn't look like I belonged as a topless showgirl in Vegas. I think that the key is to just blend, blend, blend and if you think that you may have overdosed on the shimmer you can always use some powder to tone it down. I normally hate doing face shots for the blog but I was really happy with this look.This is perfect for those days where you want your skin to look a bit more awake, and really, there's nothing wrong with faking a good night's sleep. Now, faking orgasms, well, that's another story :)

OOTD: Back to School in J Brand Royal Blue

Hello Friends,

This week was back to school and let me tell you that I cannot believe that I am the mother of a 1st grade child. On Tuesday I was among the flurry of anxious parents waiting to make sure that their kids made it to the right classroom, and as my child proudly walked into his big boy school mama cried like a bitch.

And, this is what I wore:

These pants were a bit of a risk for me, but I must admit that they are such an awesome jolt of color that I couldn't resist them. They were offered to me at a HUGE discount (thanks to my loyalty points at Mendecino, a retailer here in Canada) so I jumped at the chance to take them home! This color is extremely versatile, I can picture wearing them with white, grey, and even gold and can easily be dressed up or down. Because I was dropping my kid off at school I didn't want to make too much of a bold statement so I kept the look simple with a black top, some cute shoes and a rockin' bag:

And just to mix it up a bit, I thought that this bag would be a great option. It does match my pants, and I'd be a hit with the kids too!):

On second thought, um, maybe not.

Another thing that I should mention about these pants are that they are super duper comfortable. They are slightly high waisted (sits about 1/2 an inch from my belly button) therefore does not aggravate my muffin top and are stretchy enough so that I can easily bend down to clean little one's pee off of the floor- true story! Honestly I am a huge fan of J brand jeans in general, I bought my first pair 6 years ago and they are still a crucial part of my wardrobe. I've since added another 7 pairs (mix of cargos, cigarette pants and bell bottoms) and have not looked back.

Monstruous lashes with Maybelline the Falsies Mascara

Hello Friends,

I will admit that God kind of screwed me in the lash department. I've been relying on very expensive mascaras (like this one) to help my teeny tiny lashes look like they at least exist. I have to be very careful when choosing mascaras- it needs to be waterproof, smudgeproof AND be able to lengthen and thicken my lashes. I've hesitated to try the 'drugstore brands', because I am a makeup snob picky person and haven't tried a Maybelline product since 1995. But I am a victim to advertising (you have to admit that the ads make this product look DAMN good, even if it is fake lashes on the models) so I picked this up as an impulse buy at my local grocery store and could not wait to try it on:

Mascara: Maybelline The Falsies Volume Express Waterproof mascara $7.99 CAD- Available at local drug store.

First off, I was pretty impressed with the brush, it was huge. Now this really is a case where bigger, is definitely better:

This brush, no joke, was bigger then my eye. I found that the application was smooth, with very few clumps. My usual routine for applying mascara is:

1) Curl lashes with eyelash curler (I used Shu Uemera)
2) Apply mascara zig-zagging the wand back and forth horizontally
3) Wait about 10 minutes to let mascara dry
4) Curl the lashes again.
5) Use eyelash comb to seperate clumps (if they exist)

Not bad for $7.99 huh?

The only issues that I came across was that it did smudge a wee bit during the day (but this can easily be taken care of with some spare baby wipes on hand) and it was a bit hard to take off (as I got the waterproof formula this was to be expected).

So suffice to say, I was pretty happy with this product. It's at a wonderful price point (even better if you get it on sale!) and it left me with long, flirty lashes. Hopefully it will work for you too! Now if only I can find something where my lashes can look like this:

I mean, is it wrong to be jealous of your child's lashes? Maybe I'll discuss this with my therapist!- Haha!
