Toronto Fashion Week- Wish you were here!

Earlier this week I was approached with the most amazing opportunity- to attend a portion of Toronto's Fashion week as a guest of one of our corporate partners. I had to pinch myself in amazement as I never dreamed that I would ever have the chance to attend a real live fashion show, let alone for one of the most fashionable events of the year. So I thought that I would invite you along for the ride.......

Micalla Fall 2011

This was the first show on the agenda. Can you believe that we were actually sitting in the front row? The designer, who's known for her 'wearable art' collections really made a statement with her simple yet elaborate designs. Simply gorgeous! However, it was my first time seeing runway models really up close and I couldn't believe how skinny they were. The models looked fierce, almost angry while strutting down that runway. I think it's because they hadn't eaten in a week. You can literally see their bones protruding out. Very interesting indeed.

DUY Fall 2010

This was our second show, and once again, we were front row (tough life, isn't it)? This was an awesome show filled with flowy leopard print tops and gorgeous fluttery maxi dresses. The music was really upbeat and the models somehow looked meatier then the last show. 

And of course, no visit to Fashion week is complete without:

And just like that, it was time to go home and cook dinner for the hubby and kiddies. I felt like Cinderalla, having to leave the ball at midnight. But instead of a glass slipper, I went home with something a million times better:

I cannot describe what an amazing time I had at the show and am extremely grateful for the opportunity.  My only regret was not taking my Canon Rebel, so the shots that you see above were all taken with my iphone. Not bad huh? Hope that you enjoyed the ride as much as I did :) Maybe I will be able to go again next year?

Hourglass Film Noir Mascara- The Review

So I've heard a  lot of hype over Hourglass makeup products recently. The rumor is that Hourglass is a great luxury brand of makeup that has the most beautiful packaging and a reputation for being very high quality without breaking the bank.

Film Noir is my first hourglass product ever, and I was super excited to try this mascara because:

1) The formula is paraben, sulfate and phthalate-free (whatever that is!)
2) The brush is shaped like an hourglass to allow clump free application and to prevent flaking.
3) It was free sample from Sephora (and doesn't everything always seem better when it's free?)

This mascara promises to lengthen, thicken and moisturize with their vitamin E formula but is it a match for my tiny short lashes? We shall soon see.

THE REVIEW

So if you look at the photo above you can see that the packaging is absolutely gorgeous, and remember that this is just a sample. The wand tapers slightly in the middle (to look like an hourglass- how genius!) and upon application I notice how wet the formula is (but dries quickly) and that my lashes remain clump free. I absolutely hate it when i get clumps and need to take them out with my mascara comb (such a waste of time). After about 5 minutes I curl my lashes again and here is the result:

As you can see this mascara did provide tons of length and the curl didn't droop at all during the day. Please keep in mind that I only had one coat on and it was pretty easy to remove with makeup wipes.  I have to be honest that it did smudge just a tad however the mascara itself isn't waterproof but it wasn't anything that a quick wipe with a q-tip couldn't fix.

THE RESULT

I really do like this mascara, and would definitely consider purchasing it down the road. It really lives up to its claims and my only wish is that they would come out with a waterproof formula in their collection. Given the price it is a bit of a splurge but for the length and thickness that it provides I do think that it's worth it.

Guess who's going to Toronto Fashion week?

Me, Me, Me!!!

I know, you're probably wondering how a normal person like me gets to attend the most FASHIONABLE event of the season. Well let me tell you that the fashion gods were definitely smiling over me today. You see, I was huddled over my computer working at my most unglamorous job for a financial company when suddenly I got the most amazing email asking for volunteers to attend the LG Fashion Week show this Wednsday. I couldn't believe my luck- that my company was hooking us up with fashion show tickets and since it was first come first serve you never saw someone's fingers type so fast in your life (followed by a phone call to the admin assitant begging her to give me the tickets). Well, my persistence and passion has paid off, I have the ticket in my hand and will be attending the show on Wednsday afternoon. I am so excited as I have never been to a fashion show so the most obvious question is:

A date with my son

Today's post is not one about beauty or fashion, but about the most wonderful afternoon that I had with my older son J over the weekend. As busy as life gets for our family, my husband and I make it a priority to carve out individual time for each of our kids. First step is always to check my kids social calender, because between tae kwon doe, swimming and playdates they are actually busy little buggers. So yesterday presented itself with a free afternoon and I was able to enjoy a few precious hours with my 5 year old son. And here's how our date went:



As much as little girls love their pink tutus and sparkly shoes, little boys love their cars and trains. So what better way to start our date then to take a ride down the infamous Toronto subway line. I just love the look of joy that my son gets when he sees the train approaching and the fact that he can name most of the subway stops on the TTC. Since we had several stops before our final destination we decided to have fun and pose for some pics:

So after our mini-photo shoot on the train, we reached our stop and were absolutely famished so we headed straight to our favorite family restaurant 'The Pickle Barrel' and Yonge and Eglinton. I absolutely love this restaurant as it's is completely child friendly (I've never seen more kids/babies than at this restaurant) and the food is really good and well priced. We both ate like kings (and Queens) for less than $20. If you're ever in the Toronto area I highly suggest that you check this restaurant out!

Mmmm.... everything was so good. Afterwards he headed back on the train and headed home. It was the most fabulous afternoon, full of cute conversation (aka: Mommy, how do you say that I have to take a poo, in french?) and bonding time. And you know what the best accessory I wore all day was? A smile. And you know what they, the best things in life are free :)

Shopping with Sharon - My new treats from H&M, Zara and Sephora

Although the weather outside has been crap out lately, my mind still thinks of Spring, Spring, Spring!!! So, seeing as though this is the first week of the new season I figured that I would celebrate by doing a little bit of shopping.

First stop was H&M. I walked in and within 5 minutes came across this dress:

Okay, so maybe the picture doesn't do it justice, but it is the perfect light, flowy dress for spring. I love the understated leopard print pattern and the slight detail of the ruffles off to the right of the dress. Plus it gathers at the waist to make me look like I have somewhat of a shape and because it's not unbearably tight I could definitely pig out in this dress. And the price tag of $39.00 was definitely easy on the eyes.

Next stop was Zara and and was really excited to see this:

Honestly I have been to this store a few times and could never find anything to fit me. I'm not a huge person but there were times when I couldn't get some dresses over my thighs. Yeah, like that's not embarassing. However, today I did come across this black sheath dress and did a dance of joy when I discovered that I could actually fit in it. I did another dance of joy when I found out that the dress was $59. Doesn't it look like it should be more expensive?

My last stop was my all-time favorite store in the whole wide world - Sephora. I swear that I love this store more then sex  chocolate. I could spend hours and hours lingering over every aisle, testing and swatching every product, fantasizing about different looks that can be created with that one perfect lipstick. But alas, I only had 30 minutes to be in and out so I had to choose my products wisely. And here they are:

1) Fiberwig DIY Volumizer Mascara - This is the sister mascara to the Fiberwig Mascara that I reviewed here. I like the fact that this mascara wand isn't curved and hoping that it will load my sparse eyelashes with an abundant amount of volume. We'll see.  

2) Hourglass Aura cheek stain (in Petal)- This is one of Sephora's HOT products right now and since I ran out of my NARS Orgasm blush stick that I talk about here I thought that I would try this out. I don't own any Hourglass products so this should be an interesting buy.

3) Hourglass Film Noir Mascara (x2)- These are sample sizes that were given to me because of Insider points. I don't know much about this mascara except for the fact that the brush is shaped like an hourglass.

4) Urban Decay eye primer potion (in Sin)- Could this be the holy grail of primers for the eye? Can't wait to try!

5) Stila smudge stick waterproof eyeliner (in lionfish)- I have this product in Stingray. I love that it doesn't smudge (true to the name) even through workouts. I sometimes have it on for 13 hours and it doesn't budge. Love it!

Hmmm... I think that I see a few reviews in your future.

Why I miss Florida (and the photos to prove it!)

I've been back from my vacation for the past week now and I've gotta say that I really do miss that sunny paradise. We spent the week doing nothing but playing in the sand and eating wayyyy too many crabcakes and key lime pie topped with mounds of whipped cream. You know that it's a good vacation when your cardio only consists of walking from your ocean front condo to the beach. We also had my in-laws as built in babysitters so hubby and I had some well-deserved alone time. Needless to say we had a fantastic vacation and here are some highlights of the trip:

For someone as fashion crazy as me, I bet you would be surprised to find out that I only have 5 pairs of sandals- that's right- FIVE! My pitiful collection begs to be expanded so after months of pouring through fashion magazines I have come up with my top choices for comfortable yet stylish footwear for spring. And here they are:

Pour la Victoire Rosyln lace up booties

Don't these look so cute and comfortable? I love the lace up and peep toe elements of the shoe. Makes me want to put on a flirty dress and go!

Dolce Vita Pela Wedge

These are perfect for everyday- they offer good height and I can picture wearing them everywhere from the grocery store to a girl's night out!

Pour la Victoire Tula Wedge

I absolutely love the comfort and ease of this shoe. The back has some great gold detailing (and I am a huge fan of browna and gold together). I picture this with shorts and tank tops for day. Loves it!

Cheap Thrills - H&M Flutter top for $9.95

As much as I love my luxury brands, I do get a slight fashion high when I spot a really good deal. So when I saw this commercial here from H&M regarding their $9.95 flutter top, I thought that it was too good to be true. Because of my broad shoulders and relatively flat chest (any curviness is thanks to pounds of padding) I gravitate towards drapey, flowy tops. Luckily I had a few hours free yesterday (which is extremely rare when you've got two boys running around) so I was able to stop by H&M and squealed in delight when I saw that the flutter tops were available in several colors including Coral, White and Gray. Seeing as my wardrobe contained 0% white I decided to give it a go, and here is the result:

The flutter top was quite sheer, so to make it work appropriate I layered a black tank top underneath and added a brown studded belt for waist definition. I liked this one so much that when I saw this leopard print top that is very similar to the top above I decided to splurge:

I really like the look of the shirt tucked in, and the material was not too sheer so I could get away without the layering. The only problem is that the arms holes are wide so I won't be raising my hands anytime soon in this top. Although the price was $19.95 it was still affordable and added a splash of print to my otherwise blah wardrobe. I can just picture this top tucked into a pair of wide leg jean trouser and an awesome platform sandal. Very versatile!

Sun, sand and Target- Bring it on, Florida!

Life these past few weeks has been pretty busy to say the least. Working full time, taking care of sick kids and launching a blog leaves very little time for rest. I feel like my life has become one big cardio session. So when the in-laws recently offered to fly us down to Florida to spend time with them I happily obliged. While I look forward to some R & R with the family, building sandcastles and walking along the beach, my shopoholic self has other plans in mind. I just found out that Target will be re-issuing 34 dresses from Haute Couture designers (Zac Posen, , Rodarte, Proenza Schouler just to name a few) and that the launch date is today! And, I'm heading to Florida tomorrow!!! It's like the fashion gods have heard my prayers. The bonus is that we're going to St.Petersburg which, from what I hear is old people central so I'm hoping that competition for the sizes won't be that high.

Cle de peau concealer- The Review

Price: $85 (no, not a typo- you read correctly)

Let me preface this post by saying that purchasing this product was not my fault- it was stupid Kim Kardashian's fault. Alright fine... she did not hold a gun to my head but in a recent interview she stated that she used this concealer to hide all of her 'dark circles' and I figured that this was the secret to why she always looked so fresh on her party girl scheduele. So in a moment of weakness at Holt Renfew, I handed over my credit card (please hubby, don't be reading this!!) and purchased this so- called miracle stick and I couldn't wait to put it to the test! Could it be too good to be true? Would I be able to say goodbye to my undereye circles forever?

The Review

As you can see in the picture above, the product comes in a stick form (not much bigger then a lipstick- quite small actually for what you'd expect from the price) and I found it just a tad dry when i put it on my skin. I tend to apply concealer only under my eyes and sometimes at the sides of my nostrils to counter some slight discoloration there. I find that you have to warm the concealer a bit between your fingers so that it blends better and i didn't notice the product caking into my creases too much so that was a good sign. I tend to prefer more moist/creamier concealers so this was definitely a change for me. There's no doubt that this is a pretty decent concealer, but I really wanted to know if it did a better job then my everyday concealer so I decided to put it up against Benefit's Erase paste. And how did it hold up? You be the judge.

The Verdict:

Cle de Peau might mean "key to great skin" in french, but in my vocabulary it translates to "don't waste your money". Yes, I do notice a slight improvement in the coverage from the pictures above but the price does not justify such a small difference. I believe that there are many great concealers out there for 1/3 of the price (namely Benefit Erase Paste and Laura Mercier secret camoflouge just to name a few) and i don't think that I will be purchasing this product ever again due to price. So a note to  Ms. Kim Kardashian: If you are reading this I would like my $85 dollars back! It's not this concealer that makes you look like you have no dark circles it's the four hours that the makeup artist spends caking all that crap on your face to make you look good!

My $25.00 hair cut at Evoke Salon

Last July, I experienced major hair trauma. I went to a very high end salon in Yorkville with the high hopes of getting long, sexy Kim Kardashian layers and ended with a Jennifer Aniston hair cut circa 1997. The real disappointment was the price tag of $120. I never thought that I would ever cry over my hair but that day a few tears were shed. I vowed that I would never ever pay more than $80 for a haircut, no matter how fancy the salon.

It's been 8 months since my last hair cut. My hair was so overgrown that I began to resemble cousin IT from the Addams family. I knew that I had to get my hair cut soon but wanted to go to a place that was reputable and wouldn't break the bank. So when my co-worker suggested Evoke salon, (located in the yonge and eglinton area) I promptly made an appointment with her hair stylist Ryan.

I knew that it was a good sign when I arrived at the salon and they offered me my choice of beverage (tea, juices, espresso, etc) and had free wifi available. Ryan was very welcoming and accommodating as we discussed options for my hair. He didn't try to convince me to cut more off then I was comfortable with and he gave the most wondeful scalp and neck message ever (thanks to those magic fingers!) Also, he was very easy to chat with. And the haircut, well, here are the results:

Needless to say, I absolutely love my hair cut! It completely restored my faith in hair stylists and you know what the biggest surprise of all was? The price!! Thanks to a 50% off referral coupon that my colleague gave me, my hair cut was a whopping $25.50 (Normally the cuts here start at $50 and up- which still is a good price). Also I was surprised to find out that if you pre-book your appointments at the salon you are entitled to $5.00 off your next session and that they also send you a birthday surprise. Sharon's Beauty Showcase- For Face

So this is the second series to my beauty showcase and in case you missed my last showcase on skincare, click here. This week it's all about face. It's the first thing that people notice about you (i think?) so here are my steps to faking a good complexion.


1) Laura Mercier Hydrating Primer: I had never used primer until a few months ago. Prior to using one, I always wondered why my makeup was fading faster than Kim Kardashian's singing career. As I am a huge fan of Laura Mercier products and her promise of 'flawless skin' I took a leap of faith and purchased this product and now am hooked. Makeup primers, much like paint primers, offer a smooth canvas for the skin, used after moisturizing and right before foundation. It helps to control shine, shrink pores and to help make your make up last through the workday. I really notice it's smoothing effect and love how my tinted moisturizer (mentioned below) glides on my face. I could do a whole review on this product, it's really a must have in my books.

2) Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 20 (in sand): Love, Love, Love this product. Love the fact that it has SPF 20, Love the fact that  it sinks into my skin and covers alot of my imperfections and also LOVE the fact that a tube could last me more then 6 months as you don't need a lot to do the job. Even though this is called a  'moisturizer' per say I always moisturize, prime and then apply the product. I don't think that it would do a very good job moisturizing on it's own (as it's more of a light foundation) especially if your skin is on the drier side like mine is.

3) Nars Orgasm Stick: I love orgasms, and I love Nars, so this is a perfect combination for me :) All jokes aside, I love using this cheek/lip/eye color as a base for my Nars blushes - I just swipe some color from the stick onto my cheekbones and blend, blend, blend. The result is not dramatic, but more of a flushed natural look- the I just got laid look, and that's an awesome look, if you ask me.

4) Nars blushes (in Orgasm and Gina): Of all the blushes that I've ever tried I always keep coming back to Nars. They have staying power and can magically create cheek bones that I never new existed. Orgasm is their most popular (due to explanation above) and the color Gina looks like it's orange in the compact but when applied diagonally across my cheekbones makes my face look 5 pounds thinner. And that, to me, is a miracle :)

5) Nars Bronzer in Laguna: This is another best seller of Nars. When we think of bronzers we think tanned, summer, beach but this is the perfect color to wear to everyday if you want just that extra glow. Perfect for those days where you feel like your skin is pasty and you don't want to reach for that self-tanner. I like to apply it with a big fluffy brush and will sometimes apply it to my decollege and neck when I'm wearing a low cut top so that my skin color matches the whole way through.

6) Benefit's High Beam: This is usually the last step to my makeup. This product is a pinky color that adds just a touch of shimmer to your overall look. It isn't noticeable at first but depending on which way you stand in the light it gives you that extra 'je ne sais quoi'. It comes with a nailbrush like applicator and I like to apply it to the top of my cheekbones and just pat it gently so that it settles nicely into my skin.

Splurge Alert!!- It's a Jacket and it's a.............

For someone who loves to shop as much as I do, I actually refrained from buying a new jacket for 5 years. That's right- 5 freak'n years!! All my winter/spring/fall jackets have buttons missing and/or are all frayed on the inside but my cheap ass did not want to spend money on a new jacket. However, about a week ago we were treated to some warm weather (and for us canadians, that means a high of 4 degrees) and I happened to pass by the most beautiful leather jacket at Aritzia that I just HAD TO HAVE. And, here is is:

It's is the most perfect jacket for spring. Look how versatile it is, you can wear it undone, partly zipped or for those chilly days you can just button it all up. The color is awesome too- it's called 'gunmetal' and is just a great neutral to dress up or dress down. I've never owned a jacket that wasn't black so this will definitely be a welcome addition to my wardrobe. The only non-awesome aspect of getting this jacket is when hubby found out the price (it was $575). And do you know how he found out? I was modelling the jacket for him (am I the only one who models their clothes for their significant other?) and as usual he inquired about the price. I tried very unsuccessfully to hide it from him until he promptly wrestled me to the ground, took a look at the price tag and then point blank asked me if I had brain damage. I thought his reaction was a bit much but I am very happy with my purchase and will continue to use it for years to come.

Fiberwig XL Beautenizer Mascara- The Review

Mascara is an integral part of my daily makeup routine. Like many asians, I was blessed with a head full of shiny dark hair but got screwed in the lash dept. I have short, sparse eye lashes and have great difficulty finding a mascara that can hold a curl and lengthen at the same time. I've tried so many mascaras and have been met with great disappointment as they either smudge and/or clump. So when I discovered the Fiberwig XL Beautifier Mascara at Sephora which claims that it is smudge proof and can produce false lash effects (due to the brush on fibre extension technology), I was skeptical but intrigued. These are pretty big claims, so I decided to put it to the test.

The Review

My first impression of this product is 'wow, the bottle is so pretty', but really, who cares as it's what's inside that counts, right? So as you can see in the picture, the mascara has a unique curved brush, which in my mascara experience could either work for you or against you as i find that sometimes they can be a bit tricky to maneuver. Before I applied the mascara I needed to curl my eyelashes first. I cannot use mascara without my eyelash curl, they go together like peanut butter and chocolate- yum!  So my mascara routine is the following:

1. Curl Eyelashes
2. Apply Mascara
3. Wait 10 minutes
4. Curl Eyelashes again

And voila, you have the following results:

The great news as well as this product really is smudgeproof and held the curl for almost 10 hours. And I only needed to apply one coat! I've worn it through rain, snow and even to the gym and it never ran or smudged. Yay!

The Verdict

This products proves that even though God didn't bless me with a thick fringe of lashes technology can, so I am very very happy with this mascara and definitely recommend it even though the price tag is a big on the high side. It also may clump if there is too much product on the wand so you just need to take the excess off with tissue to ensure smooth application. For more information on this mascara and it's benefits please go here. J Brand Houlihans- Are they worth it?

I bought my first pair of J brand jeans almost 6 years ago. I tried a pair on 6 months post-pregnancy with my first son and I couldn't believe how they made my lower half look. I needed all the help that i could get in the butt department so even though the price tag made me want to throw up a little I gave in and splurged. Years later, they are still a staple in my closet and I have remained a loyal Jbrand fan ever since. When the Jbrand Houlihan made it's debut a few years ago, I vowed to get myself a pair. I mean, look how great they looked on these celebrities:



I envisioned myself wearing them to the parc, to the grocery store, out on a hot date with the hubby, but alas, the price (of almost $300) made it impossible to own a pair of these hot pants. Until recently, a friend of mine showed up on a girl's night out wearing the vintage olive houlihans (with an awesome purple and black drapey top and gorgeous miu miu booties) and I screamed with delight when she told me that she got them for half price. I literally ran to the nearest Mendecino where the sales person confirmed the rumors- that the houlihans were ALL 50% off  as they were clearing them out for the new and improved 'distressed houlihans' (which, by the way if you ask me look no different from the original ones and were almost $400- eek!) So, as I am such a bargain hunter I finally got myself a pair of these babies. And here's a pic:




Pants: J brand Vintage Olive Houlihans, Shoes: Town shoes





They are everything that I thought they would be: stylish, versatile and extremely comfortable. I love the detailing of the pants, the side zippers add a dose of cool while the back pockets help plump up a flat butt (like mine). Even though they are cargo style you don't have to wait till spring to wear them. They look great with over the knee boots for the chilly weather now and you can definitely style them up with nude or brown sandals for summer. I loved the houlihans so much that I decided buy two more colors to add to my collection:

So my verdict is if you're in the market for pair of everyday pants that can go from casual school drop-off to absolute stunner in a pair of high heels and a blazer then these are the right pants for you. I wouldn't be so enthusiastic if they weren't half price though, so run, don't walk to your nearest J brand retailer.
